SALVADOR DALÍ
(Figueras, Spain, 1904 – 1989)
The Christ of Gala, 1980
Lithograph
MAB’s permanent collection
The scene refers to the crucifixion of Jesus, narrated in the four Gospels. On this lithograph, the cross appears horizontally, contrary to its traditional vertical representation. The body of Jesus is seen lying on top of the cross, which floats above the sky. The artist projects a serene crucifixion, without serious visible wounds. In the background, a landscape with an isolated mountain, which alludes to Cadaqués, one of the places with familiar ties to the artist. The title of the work alludes to Dalí’s wife’s name Gala; she is said to be one of his greatest inspirations.
About the work: This piece is part of the lithography collection that marked the beginning of the MAB’s collection in 2003, prior to the integration of national artists starting in 2005.
