Santa María, 1953-1955
Rafael Tufiño
Linocut
Santa María is one of the prints that make up the portfolio Plenas. This portfolio consists of twelve prints created by Rafael Tufiño and Lorenzo Homar, dedicated to Manuel Jiménez “Canario”. The image of this plena represents a monster that confronts a multitude of people facing it with machetes in hand and a carved wooden figure of the Virgin María. To the right, appears the score of the plena “Santa María.” Would you sing along?
Santa María, líbranos de todo el mal,
Ampáranos Señora, de este terrible animal.
Tenía cara de buey,
El pecho de un toro bravo,
Tenía patas de yegua
Y yarda y media de rabo
