Irene Delano, an American artist established in Puerto Rico in 1946 with her husband Jack Delano, was a graphic designer, book illustrator and educator. In 1947, she organized and directed the first silk-screen and graphic printing workshop of the Cinema and Graphic Unity under the Parks and Recreation Commission. In 1949, this Cinema and Graphic Unity turned into the Community Education Division (DIVEDCO) of the Department of Public Instruction of Puerto Rico. She led the Graphic Workshop of the DIVEDCO until 1952. Under her direction, she trained the team of artists that will later be known as the Generation of the 50’s. Amongst scarce resources, she introduced silk-screen printing as a primary medium for the printing of posters. Her familiarity with the medium and fabric stamping came from her mother, who was owner of a textile industry in Canadá (Teresa Tió, 2003). Later on, Irene Delano acquired the first photo-lithographic machines that allowed and increased the production process of visual material in the DIVEDCO.
